SP10.2.7 Preparing foundation trainees for surgical on-calls

Abstract Foundation trainee feedback has highlighted low levels of confidence with the prospect surgical oncalls. Key areas concern are; assessing acute patient, identifying which patients need an operation and having technical skills to competently assist in theatre. This lack prevents trainees engaging educational rewarding rotation. We have designed facilitated a day robust workshops, addressing these key needs. Pre post course questionnaires assessed efficacy teaching. Lectures on assessment management general surgery, urology trauma orthopaedics were delivered by core trainees. A named consultant oversaw presentations ensure quality assurance. Addressing development need, afternoon workshops covered; suturing, knot tying, laparoscopic principles theatre etiquette. Small groups rotated through each workshop, senior specialty registrars, high fidelity training. Trainees rated themselves pre scale from 1-5. course, 66% scored 3+ “confidence managing patient on-call”. rose 100% course. Similarly; “Confidence decision making regarding whether should proceed theatre” increased 37.5% 93.7%. “Suturing skills” improved 100%. All that attended displayed marked improvement their competence. feel this or similar be incorporated into foundation teaching program locally scope expanded regionally.
